What does freedom mean to you?

Jul 04, 2023

Jesse Elder has speaking on freedom and it peaked my interest… listening to him it made me ponder…

Freedom to everyone means something different.

It is a bit like Bob Ansett said, ‘Define Success’ - it is different for everyone and there is no real ‘line’ of what success is because that looks different for everyone in their life..

Freedom - is exactly the same.

These things that we seem to subconscious long for, but there is no real line or definition and actually creating the freedom and/or success you desire, requires a lot of discipline, determination and a clear goal and focus on actually achieving it.

It got me thinking…

My freedom requirements and what that means to me - has changed at every stage of my life… but it seems to be the driving force of my entire life that has allowed me to live and create the way I do and have - almost like an inspirational beacon of hope that has paved the way and taken me to each step of my entire life.

When I was 16 - freedom to me, meant getting in a car when I finished high school and driving around Australia. (What actually happened? When I was 18 I got in a car and left for the other side of Australia and never returned home, still to this day. Now, where I’m on the other side of Australia, is my home).

When I was 18 - freedom to me, meant travelling the world and following the summers and festivals around the world. At the time I was hardcore raving in Brisbane every weekend and calling in sick every Monday. Not sure how my boss kept me there at work, but maybe it was that I had a knack for selling high quality products to high quality people that kept coming back.

When I was 23 - freedom to me meant running to the beach every morning and meditating religiously for 20mins before work.

When I was 28 - freedom to me was raising my daughter the way I wanted to. She was 2 at the time.

When I was 33 - freedom to me meant having my own business so I could stay home and homeschool/unschool my daughter. I had chosen to become a single parent. Freedom to me, meant being able to provide her life experiences that we enjoy. We lived near the beach, surfed and went to the beach whenever we wanted. I chose a life where we miss the crowds because every one is working normal hours. This, is freedom to me.

Between 33 and 37 - freedom to me, building my business meant that after years of sacrifice and hard dedicated, consistent work, meant I could buy the jeans I love, the jumpers that kept me warm in the winter and pay my bills, let alone provide for my daughter and get us a new car. I had taken myself off the parenting benefit and providing for us through what I create. In 2020, that new car enabled us to go on a 5 month road trip because we wanted to… that… is definitely freedom to me.

At 38, freedom to me is providing a stable home environment, cooking delicious food with my daughter and watching her thrive as she loves cooking as a teenager and witnessing her life stages as a human with the freedom to do what she wants via unschooling philosophy is definitely priceless to me.

Whilst there is a part of me that longs for travel and laptop lifestyle, I have many times over questioned that a long the way. I began this business for many reasons and one of them was that. However, I chose to find a house, make it a home and create a home base.

The ‘freedom’ lifestyle is not that I don’t live it… It is that it is a guiding light for every single choice that I make.

At any moment in time I could pack up our home into a storage shed and get on the road - we’ve definitely done that before in 2020. Whilst it was an adventure, my Soul longed for a home base.

Freedom to me, means that whatever I choose to do - I can. And do. I could choose to exercise, or I could choose to sit there and do nothing. Freedom comes with every single choice we make at any given in time in day.

We are never truly stuck. I used to complain that I am stuck out here in the country, but the reality is I could pack up our house and go road tripping, but I choose not to. I love the home I have created through the essence of freedom of living a life completely of my choosing. That is freedom.

You are never stuck - you are always free. You are just choosing to be where you are because you actually don’t want to do the other choices you think you want to make.

I think I want to go dancing and bush doofing and ‘follow the summers and raves’. But when an opportunity came up recently for a bush doof literally around the corner from my property, I chose not to go. The music got me.. then the mud after a week of rain, I chose not to. I love my music and dancing, but what I thought was freedom and me wanting to do that, is not… I choose to stay with my daughter in our warm loving comfy home and enjoy our company together. That.. is freedom to me.

The choice you have to do whatever you want to do is right there for you.

My ‘big dreams’ of super yachts and private jets… for whatever reason they are there… have not gone away and will not and I have not given up on them. What I have given up on is forcing and rushing through life, missing out on the precious moment in time that I have right now in front of me, of all I have created right in front of me to date… that freedom… is my inspiration, my guiding light and every single day, I follow this, through every step, every choice, every action and every breath.

Is freedom another word for intuition?

What does freedom mean to you?
